The opportunity
Qurtuba is not one timber building.
It is a body of work.
Offices, a restaurant, a musallah, a design studio and glamping units. Together they form a built record of pallet timber used across a precinct.
The work exists. Its public story does not, yet.
The material story
Pallets became parts.
Parts became place.
Discarded pallets were deconstructed into stringers and blocks.
Those components became stacked walls, infill, cladding and detailed block arrangements.
The foundation
The ingredients are unusually strong.

Academic context
Yusuf Patel is a professional architect and PhD researcher at Newcastle University.
